The work process and the material Apart from the search for form, the work process is strongly stamped by the choice of material. For me, stone is the greatest challenge for a sculptor. It is obstinate, merciless but at once tolerant and spontaneous. For me it is the stone which lays down the rules and thus, finally, also the form. In the work process it is the intensity of the understanding between stone and sculptor which determines the quality of the form. This dialogue occasionally develops into a hard fight which takes me a long way from my original idea, forces me to think anew, and thus opens up undreamt-of paths to me. With stone, form can only be won slowly and systematically. This is also the deciding factor in a stone sculpture. I knock something off and cannot alter what I have done. There is no way back. Not like in plastic work with moulds or plaster, where it is always possible to correct mistakes. What Rodin pupil Hoetger describes as "surmounting the block feeling" in work with stone, is the deciding factor for me in the work process. The deliverance of the form from the limits of the block of stone demands will-power and the readiness on my part, to pay tribute for being able to make changes to this elemental force. |
